James H. McMullin Obituary

McMULLIN James Henry McMullin ( Age 98) On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, James McMullin passed away peacefully. Beloved husband of 40 years to Margaret Forbes McMullin, he was the cherished stepfather to Elaine L. Crosby and Bobby J. Crosby. Jim leaves his two brothers, Jerry McMullin and John McMullin and a treasured sister, Peggy Ann Tallman. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Born in Essex, Missouri, he graduated from University of Missouri and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was assigned as Major and was a staff officer for the 10th Army in the Pacific Theatre (Philippines and Okinawa). Following the end of war service, Major McMullin was selected to participate in the surrender of Japanese Army elements on Miyako Islands and the Sakishima Gunto.

Mr. McMullin left active military service in 1946, moving to Arlington, Virginia and developing a real estate and construction business which he actively managed during the succeeding 72 years. As a Realtor during said period, and in addition to his business activities, he was elected to the Presidency of the Real Estate Board twice in 1959 to 1969. In 1967 to 1977, McMullin served as the President of the Virginia Association of Realtors. These activities came to the attention of competition in national and international affairs, i.e. he was elected to the prestigious Counselors of Real Estate in 1970. He was also selected as a member of the International Organization headquartered in Paris, France, where he headed its counseling section in 1977 to 1978. During his considerable career in real estate he developed several hundred affordable single family homes and in a joint venture with the Borges family in Cuba they produced the 1020 N. Quincy Street Apartments. Later he also constructed a laboratory facility for the U.S. Government and followed by developing an industrial park in Springfield, Virginia known as Springfield Industrial Park. Said development was undertaken with Middle East financial assistance in 2001-2010. The result was a number of warehouses and other types of structures. An avid adventurer, Jim and Margaret traveled the world. Jim was never without a book and was still reading up to a few days before his passing. A visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Virginia 22203 on Saturday, March 10, between 2 and 4 p.m. A full military ceremony will be arranged at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
